New York City is a destination for travelers all over the world. Whether you are initially coming to the city on a business trip or intend to spend the entire time sightseeing and taking in the locations around the city, there is so much to see that it can almost seem overwhelming. Many people try to cram as much as they can into as short of amount of time as possible, but perhaps the best plan of action is to try and hit as many of the highlights the  city has to offer as possible so you can savor just a few of them in the time you have. Times Square

Statue of Liberty

You would be hard-pressed to come to New York City and not have this recommended as one of the top tourist sites to see on your trip. Millions of people visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island each year. The Statue has such a historical context with the United States that often just seeing it is enough to fill people with wonder and awe. Located on Liberty Island, it can only be reached via ferry and had been closed to the public recently due to security reasons and storms that hit the area within recent times but is now open again. Visiting the Statue and Ellis Island can give you a unique historical perspective on coming to the United States.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art  is world-renowned for holding one of the most elite art collections anywhere. People come from all over the world just to see some the many exhibits housed in the museum or to view the vast permanent collection on display. The museum is the largest art museum in the United States and one of the ten largest in the entire world. Everything from ancient to contemporary can be found and more than just traditional pieces of art are housed there, including all types of costumes, musical instruments, armor, weapons and more from all around the world.

Central Park

Central Park  is another one of those areas that people are naturally drawn to on a visit to New York. Originally opened in 1857, the park is now over 800 acres of area that is perfect just to take a walk through and see the natural beauty that lies right in the heart of this large city. It is the most visited urban park in all of the country with over 35 million people coming to the park annually to see it. There are several lakes and ponds that decorate the landscape of the park and offer many places of quiet solitude. You can also visit the zoo in the park or the conservatory garden.

Empire State Building

Once known as the tallest building in the world, the Empire State Building is still a sight to behold for many tourists to the city. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the building stands at 103 stories and is over 1,400 feet tall. You can take a trip up to the observation deck of the building and get a view unlike any other in the entire city. The distinctive Art Deco style of the building has allowed it to stand out among buildings throughout the world and make it a great historical icon to visit.

Bronx Zoo

Located just outside of New York City in the Bronx, the Bronx Zoo is known the world over as one of the best zoos to visit. With hundreds of exhibits and species, the zoo is considered to be the world’s largest metropolitan zoo. There are many great things to see at the zoo, including many endangered species. Some of the highlights of the zoo include the polar bear exhibit, the butterfly tent and the African and Asian areas which feature many wondrous animals. You could also take the monorail train and ride over the entire park, getting an amazing view.

Staten Island Ferry

While this may not be a fixed location that many people think of, taking a ride on the Staten Island Ferry can offer a unique and romantic experience for some people. The ferry runs between Manhattan and Staten Island and takes about a five mile trip. The ferry runs around the clock every day of the year, so you can go anytime for a ride on the river and enjoy the ambiance and views.

9/11 Memorial

The National 9/11 Memorial and Museum is located at the World Trade Center site to commemorate and honor those who lost their lives on the day of the attacks of September 11, 2001. The memorial itself officially opened in 2011 while the museum is still being constructed, but you can visit the memorial and be deeply moved and view the names of the victims of the attacks around the beautiful pools assembled there.

Coney Island

For a day of nostalgia and fun, just a short trip outside of New York City to the area known as Coney Island can bring you to the wonderful beaches and the famous boardwalk of the area. You can spend a day at the beach, visit the New York Aquarium that is located right at Coney Island or walk on the boardwalk to see some of the great entertainment that is located there. There is also a famous amusement park in the area if you wish to take the family or even take in a minor league baseball game at the stadium located in Coney Island.

Lincoln Center

If you are looking to take in a night of special music in Manhattan, then Lincoln Center may be your area of choice. The over sixteen acres of area encompasses several different music halls that can appeal to all types of music lovers. The world famous Metropolitan Opera House offers a wonderful opera schedule, while Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall offer performances by the New York Philharmonic and other chamber and orchestral music. There are also venues designed specifically for jazz music and the New York Ballet.
